Keels are not standard equipment on our new canoes, but can be added as an option. We discourage putting keels on canoes because a keel on a flat water canoe just adds weight without delivering benefit to the canoeist. Also, about 20 screw holes have to be punched through the canvas or Polyester Dacron in order to attach the keel. If the covering is canvas and it is keeled, moisture gets trapped under the keel and rots the canvas. This will happen over time, regardless of how much effort is put into waterproofing this area during construction. Overall we feel that the drawbacks of keels far outweigh any perceived benefits which they may offer.
